The heart of the Salzburger Sportwelt area

The heart of the Salzburger Sportwelt area and home to one of our clients’ favourite slopes and one of the most popular mountain restaurants, the famous Doughnut Hut (egg & bacon doughnut anyone?).

The town nestles between the Grafenberg and Griessenkareck mountains and offers a great range of long blue and red slopes on both mountains ideal for putting miles on your ski legs.

Fun, Fun, Fun on the Autobahn

Once you access the Grafenberg Gondola there is no reason to return to the town as you can access all the slopes on both sides of the mountain via the stunning G-Link cable car and from there it is easy to explore the slopes to Alpendorf and Flachau. Beginners will find the sun bathed terrace at the top of the Grafenburg an ideal starting point before heading over to join the progressing skiers on the fabulous long red runs down to the town. Our groups call these runs the ‘Autobahn’ and as the name suggests these are wide open motorway style slopes that are great at building confidence. These long runs mean more time on skis and less time on lifts.

Test your mettle

After jumping on the G-Link the more testing slopes of the Flying Mozart gondola await. Some real leg burners to get your teeth into on this side of the mountain that will push the most advanced skiers. For those wishing to push on further than Flachau take the Panorama lift over to access the runs in sunny Kleinarl and Flachauwinkl before pushing on into Zauchensee.

Accommodation

Eat when you’re ready

For lunch there are options at the top, middle and bottom of the mountain but our groups always find their way to the Grafenbergalm or the Krapfenalm (doughnut house), the fabulous Strachenstadl with its huge sun terrace and the stunning Mountain Club or cosy Sonnalm, wherever you stop you will always be well received and never go hungry – our instructors stay with the group to ensure everyone has something suitable to eat.

Prettiest resort of the Salzburger Sportwelt area
Possibly the prettiest resort of the Salzburger Sportwelt area and home to the famous downhill racer Hermann Maier or the ‘Herminator’ as he was affectionately known, who runs a ski school in the town.
With an incredible number of runs radiating down from the peak of the Griessenkareck Mountain – students can easily spend 45 minutes skiing down the mountain from top to bottom on just one run. Flachau offers a great range of long blue and red slopes with more testing black of the Top Liner lift a great challenge.

Great for Learning

Flachau is particularly well suited to school groups with mixed ability levels. Known for its wide, well-groomed slopes and modern lift system Flachau provides an ideal environment for learning, progression and enjoyment on the mountain.

Flachau is especially strong for beginners, offering a large selection of gentle blue runs that are wide, clearly marked and easy to navigate. Dedicated learning zones, including the popular Kidsrun area, help make early lessons engaging and confidence-building for younger or less experienced students. Modern lifts and well-organised meeting points support safe group management and smooth transitions throughout the ski day.

For intermediate students, Flachau is an excellent choice. The resort is renowned for its long, flowing red and blue pistes, which are perfect for developing technique and building confidence.

Build Skiers’ confidence

While Flachau itself is predominantly intermediate in nature, more advanced students can access greater challenges nearby. The connection to Zauchensee opens up steeper terrain, including the well-known World Cup Kälberloch piste, as well as additional demanding runs. The Gamskogel Nord descent provides a longer, steeper test for confident skiers.

Students can enjoy seamless, lift-linked access to extensive terrain across Flachau, Wagrain and St. Johann–Alpendorf, allowing for varied skiing without the need for transport. The wide piste are also ideal for progressing skiers allowing for high mileage exploration of the full area.

Take on the Ski Safari

From the top of the Griessenkareck Mountain groups can also ski down the Flying Mozart runs to get access to the G-Link to return to the Wagrain side of the valley. Indeed, many of our beginners group by the end of the week are taking on the Flachau to Alpendorf ski safari – a great achievement for their first school ski trip.

A great starting point for all Salzburg Sportwelt trips

One of the most popular starting points in the Salzburger Sportwelt area and home to the IBT resort management office. Alpendorf is easily accessible from our most popular accommodation options with a short transfer of between 10 to 20 minutes on average.

Slopes for All Abilities

After meeting in the coach park, the group take the short walk to the Kreisten-Alm high speed chair, beside the IBT Office, for the trip up to the meeting area at the Kreisten-Alm restaurant. From there, beginners will start off on the gentle slope beside the restaurant. Intermediate and advanced groups will take the warm up run down to the Buchau gondola to whisk them to the top of the Gernkogel mountain, where they will begin exploring the fabulous, winding red runs back down towards the Gondel Stubel, Kreisten-Alm or Buchau lifts.

Complete the Ski Safari

From the top of the Gernkogel, groups can ski over to the Hirschkogel mountain and spend time on the fabulous, confidence building blue and red runs that head down to the Hirschkogelbahn & Strassalmbahn lifts to return to the peak or head further over to the Sonntagskogel chair that gives access over into the Wagrain area and more fantastic open piste skiing. From there it is a short hop on the G-Link cable car to the Flachau ski area. Indeed, many of our beginners group manage to complete the Flachau to Alpendorf ski safari by the end of the week – a great achievement for their first school ski trip.

First Class Food

At lunchtime, the Kreisten-Alm is hard to beat. IBT enjoys a special relationship with the owners and staff with our groups always being treated to that little bit extra. Although other venues are available in the Alpendorf area, once you have tried the Kreisten-Alm, you won’t go anywhere else.

Picture-perfect skiing

Encircled by the picturesque Lagorai, Pale di San Martino and Latemar Dolomites the valley boasts one of the most snow sure ski areas in Europe. One ski pass covering a variety of ski areas offering over 160km of some of the best skiing in the Italian Dolomites. Each of the ski areas offers a very different skiing experience, but they all share the same high-quality lift system (consisting mainly of chairlifts and gondolas) and pride in piste preparation that is often quoted as being the best in Europe. The majority of the slopes are over 1700m and this, combined with excellent snow making facilities, ensures great skiing throughout the season from December to mid-April.

Ski Centre Latemar

Most groups begin their week at Ski Centre Latemar – the biggest area of the valley. The wide blue and red graded motorway style runs wind across five valleys of open and tree lined piste. Such is the effect of this area that our returning clients have begun to give the slopes their own names so if you want to ski the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ or take in the view from ‘Grappa Mountain’ just ask.

Beginners will find gentle slopes using modern magic carpets at both areas before heading across the mountains to the progressive blues and reds. As confidence and skill develops skiers will head towards the top of the Tresca bubble express to enjoy the 4km run back to the Pampeago base or the 3.5km run down from the Gardone chair. Advanced skiers will enjoy the off-piste possibilities as well as the challenge of the black Pala di Santa piste.

Alpe Lucia

Bellamonte really is the beautiful mountain. Beginners and intermediate skiers will love the long winding slopes of Bellamonte. Bellamonte offers one of the best ‘home runs’ in the valley on the 5.5km slide from the top of the Campo Laste chair.

The more daring skiers will enjoy the challenging reds and blacks that drop down to Moena from the top of the Alpe Lusia. Of special note is the black Fiemme Oro piste that is used for race training by many of the local ski teams.

Some days late in the season are so quiet that groups feel that this is their own personal ski resort and end up spending the whole week on these slopes.

Alpe Cermis

For more experienced groups the slopes of Alpe Cermis near the main town of Cavalese offers a great choice of red and black runs, including a World Cup Downhill called ‘Olympia’. A great option for a day visit Alpe Cermis offers a change of scenery and slopes that will keep testing progressive skiers.

Many of the slopes feature a counter-camber, which makes turning an interesting event. While concentrating on the skiing we must not forget the truly spectacular scenery on offer in the valley. The stunning mountain views are simply the best in Europe.

Passo Rolle

A small resort at the head of the valley but at the top of the scenery stakes. With the base at almost 2000m the views of the Dolomite Mountains are unbelievable.

The resort is split by the main road with one side offering open rolling piste for that relaxed afternoon skiing that is need after taking on the more challenging rugged side of the resort. A must are the views from the top of the Sagantini and aptly named Paradiso chairs, one on each side of the resort but not to be missed.

The Personal Touch

Our hotels are situated along the valley with easy access to the ski areas. All are family owned & run and offer space for only one or two groups, accommodating the students in spacious rooms all with private facilities. The food and standard of service is first class and guests are always made to feel at home and part of the family.

Plenty to See and Do

The traditional valley towns of Cavalese and Predazzo have a relaxing alpine atmosphere and offer excellent facilities including swimming pools, ice rinks, discotheques and a variety of shops; and of course no visit would be complete without a visit to a Pizzeria and Ice Cream Café. The Val di Fiemme is a truly inspiring place to ski and combined with the warm welcome from the locals you will be hard pressed to find anything better in Europe.
