Winner of “best groomed pistes” and voted the best ski resort in Austria 2015, the Salzburger Sportwelt Ski area has developed into one of Austria’s premier ski regions. Offering over 350km of beautifully groomed piste, the area offers an amazing choice of interconnected skiing made up of three areas, Flachau, Wagrain and St Johann-im-Pongau.

To get the most out of your tour we will ensure that your group will visit each of the areas during your stay by planning a provisional ski timetable based on the current snow conditions. Our ski school partner will be working towards the beginners in your group being able to ski from Flachau to Alpendorf all in one day. A massive achievement for the first timers.

Let it Snow!

The area boasts one of Europe’s best snow records. The resorts central alpine position ensures that whenever a snowstorm arrives in the Alps, from either the South or the North, it is going to fall on the slopes of the Sportwelt area. The season starts in early December and runs through until late April.

The Salzburger Sportwelt invests huge amounts of money annually in the comfort and technology of their 270 modern alpine lifts and cable cars. The resort is covered by over 1000 snow canons, improving the reliability of snow cover and therefore maximizing your ski experience.

This area excels at providing après-ski for school groups offering possibilities including billiards, bowling, swimming at Aqua Salza Fun Pool and Therme Amadé, a visit to Salzburg, ice-cream and pizza nights and mini golf. There are also many shops, cafés and bars.

Perfect for Beginners, Improvers & Experts Alike

Students will be totally spoilt for choice with the sheer volume of pistes and slopes in this incredible resort.

Most groups will head up the 6 seat high speed Gondola to the Gondl Stubn meeting point. From there, groups can enjoy the wide runs down from the Hirschkogel top station or head over to the superb beginners area at the Kreisten Alm restaurant. Once up and running the groups can really take advantage of the long red and blue runs that spread out from Hirschkogel & Sonntagskogel peak and enjoy the two-valley ski safari over to the town of Wagrain. Intermediate skiers can explore the whole area as the wide variety of red runs offer great opportunities for a young person to improve their skiing skills. Advanced skiers, will find that the area is not without its challenges; not least the extensive run from the Griessenkar ridge in Flachau.

Obertauern featured in the Beatles film ‘Help’, which shows as the musical and party heritage continues with a lively apres ski scene which starts around lunchtime. The price of the accommodation in the valley ensures that the slopes are never crowded – especially during the Easter holiday or in early December.

The 26 lifts are carefully positioned all around the resort to form a unique ski arena – the red Tauern round runs clockwise and the green Tauern round runs anticlockwise. The cleverly arranged system plus the majority of slopes being blue runs (61km) and red runs (35km) offers the possibility to ski the entire valley from a single lift and return to the same starting point – spacious ski bridges have been erected for crossing the road! This means plenty of piste for improving skiers to gain confidence and a perfect location for a school group.

Take on the ‘Super Seven’ Challenge

More advanced skiers are not forgotten with an opportunity to take ON the Super Seven challenge, checking off the seven highest points in the Obertauern ski circuit. The Super Seven are all highlighted with the ‘S7’ markers and take in most of the 4km of black runs in the resort. There is also, subject to conditions, some fabulous off piste skiing available.
Peaceful, traditional valley, full of typical Austrian character
The Lungau area is a peaceful, traditional valley, full of typical Austrian character and easily accessible by motorway from Salzburg. Situated in the Tauern mountain range, this area has the excellent advantage of catching snowfall from the north and from the south.
The Lungau ski region extends around the charming villages of St Michael, Mauterndorf, Mariapfarr and the main town of Tamsweg, which is the coldest town in Austria. The entire valley is relatively unaffected by the regular warm winds found in the Tyrol and other areas, providing an excellent snow record throughout the season.

Safe & Friendly – Ideal for Schools

The Lungau ski region pass enables your group to ski in several different resorts, all with their own special character, and all offering a good variety of skiing. The village atmosphere and lack of crowds in these small areas creates a particularly safe and friendly environment for school parties. There are 3 main skiing areas: The Katschberg-Aineck area is on the border between Salzburgerland and Carinthia providing 70 km of varied skiing between the Aineck & Tschaneck peaks. The long motorway blue & red runs (60km in total) that radiate down from Aineck peak to St Margarethen are some of the best progression slopes in Austria and when you add in a couple of testing black runs (10km) you have the ideal set up for school groups. The area is served by 2 gondola lifts plus 6 chairs & 8 drag lifts.

Skiing for Every Level

The Großeck-Speiereck piste sits above the towns of St Michael or Mauterndorf and offers 47km of confidence building skiing for beginners and early intermediate skiers. The slopes comprise of 23km of blue runs; 17km of red runs and 7km of black runs. The long winding blue runs down from the Grosseck peak to Mauterndorf are the ideal starting grounds for most groups. More advanced skiers can head straight to the top of Speiereck at 2411m to try out the ridge line red or one of the 3 plunging blacks. Whatever your level you will find the open slopes offer fantastic views across the valley and are ideal for building the confidence in the first few days of your visit. The 5 chairlifts & single gondola plus the 7 surface lifts will ensure speedy access to all areas of the mountain.

The Fanningberg area may be the smallest in the Lungau region but the 30km on offer consists of 20km of long winding blue & red runs and 10km of sharp, steep black piste that will be a test for every skier. The area is well worth a visit to try one of the longest 6 man chair lifts in Europe – the “Samson-Jet”. The secrets to this area are the north facing slopes, a number of terr lined slopes and a starting base level of 1500m – this means great snow conditions throughout the season one of the sides of the Schwandhohe & Fanninghohe mountains.Sk

American-style resort
A hidden gem of a ski area that combines with Flachauwinkl & Kleinarl and offers skiing across 3 valleys. The resorts are located just above the resorts of Flachau and Wagrain and although not directly linked they are included on the ski pass for the Salzburger Sportwelt area.
However, there are plans in motion to have the ski areas link in the near future, this would be a great boon as these three valleys offer some great skiing including the fabulous World Cup in Zauchensee itself that will fully test all abilities.

The perfect set-up

Zauchensee offers a fabulous American style resort set up with a large ‘mall’ style base station structure as the main starting point. The base contains a number of eating options, and shops etc. Most groups will head straight up the Schwarzwandbahn gondola to get close to the Gamskogel peak before attempting the World Cup run. However, the good news is that there is a lovely winding blue run back down from the peak that meets up with a number of other red runs so regardless of your ability level you will be able to descend the hill without any major issues. Also feeding out close to the base station are 3 other chair lifts plus the Rosskopfbahn gondola that will whisk skiers up to the Rosskopf peak and the long blue and red runs back to the base or down the other side to Flachauwinkl.

Explore at Your Pace

From the top of the Mooskopf peak you can ski down to Kleinarl, the runs are a little more testing but are well worth the effort. From Kleinarl you can jump on the free ski bus that will take you down to the lifts at Wagrain. You can be assured that our instructors will ensure that you are well looked after and explore as much of this great area as possible.

Accommodation

Family Friendly Fun

Flachauwinkl side of the mountain is usually quieter and well worth the visit. Once in Flachauwinkl a short hop across the car park gets you onto the aptly named Sunshine Shuttle and then onto the Family Shuttle. As you would guess from the names Flachauwinkl is very family orientated and the mainly blue runs are fabulous playgrounds for new skiers. The resort also boasts one of the best half-pipes & super pipes in the valley plus the superb Absolut Snowpark and the Chill House mountain hut for refuelling both mind and body.
The heart of the Salzburger Sportwelt area
The heart of the Salzburger Sportwelt area and home to one of our clients favourite slopes and two of the most popular mountain restaurants – Uncle Tom’s Hut (amazing BBQ burgers) & the Doughnut Hut (egg & bacon doughnut anyone?).
The town nestles between the Grafenberg and Griessenkareck mountains and offers a great range of long blue and red slopes on both mountains ideal for putting miles on your ski legs.

Fun, Fun, Fun on the Autobahn

Once you access the Grafenberg Gondola there is no reason to return to the town as you can access all the slopes on both sides of the mountain via the stunning G-Link cable car and from there it is easy to explore the slopes to Alpendorf and Flachau. Beginners will find the sun bathed terrace at the top of the Grafenburg an ideal starting point before heading over to join the progressing skiers on the fabulous long red runs down to the town. Our groups call these runs the ‘Autobahn’ and as the name suggests these are wide open motorway style slopes that are great at building confidence. These long runs mean more time on skis and less time on lifts.

Test your mettle

After jumping on the G-Link the more testing slopes of the Flying Mozart gondola await. Some real leg burners to get your teeth into on this side of the mountain that will push the most advanced skiers. For those wishing to push on further than Flachau there is a free ski bus that will take the groups up to Kleinarl and from there you can ski over to Flachauwinkl and over again into Zauchensee.

Accommodation

Eat when you’re ready

For lunch there are options at the top, middle and bottom of the mountain but our groups always find their way to Onkel Tom’s Hutte or the Krapfenalm (doughnut house) where they are well received and never go hungry – our instructors stay with the group to ensure everyone has something suitable to eat.
Prettiest resort of the Salzburger Sportwelt area
Possibly the prettiest resort of the Salzburger Sportwelt area and home to the famous downhill racer Hermann Maier or the ‘Herminator’ as he was affectionately known, who runs a ski school in the town.
With an incredible number of runs radiating down from the peak of the Griessenkareck Mountain – students can easily spend 45 minutes skiing down the mountain from top to bottom on just one run. Flachau offers a great range of long blue and red slopes with more testing black of the Top Liner lift a great challenge.

There is a superb beginner’s area from the mid-station of the Red 8 with a mountain huts for lunch at the bottom or mid-station before heading up to the top of the Flachau ski area to explore the superb tree lined runs of the 3 Spacejet and 3 Starjet chairlifts – all slopes are well linked and superbly prepared and make progression easy for the group.

Build Skiers’ confidence

For beginners starting from the Flachau side there is a large beginner’s area at the top of the Achterjet gondola as well as two restaurants for lunch. The wide, open sunny bowl offers confidence building piste that will soon have everyone skiing over both sides of the mountain.

Take on the Ski Safari

From the top of the Griessenkareck Mountain groups can also ski down the Flying Mozart runs to get access to the G-Link to return to the Wagrain side of the valley. Indeed, many of our beginners group by the end of the week are taking on the Flachau to Alpendorf ski safari – a great achievement.
