Amsterdam is anything but ordinary.

It’s a city of canals and bicycles, stroopwafels and street art, world-famous museums and eye-opening history. And it all fits into a walkable (or cyclable!), student-friendly package that’s ideal for school groups.

This is the place to see Van Gogh’s brushstrokes up close. To walk through Anne Frank’s secret hiding spot. To cruise the canals, learn about Dutch innovation, and maybe even pick up a bit of the language along the way.

An educational trip to Amsterdam is a go-to choice for many of our schools. It’s not too far (day trips are possible), yet different enough to feel like a proper adventure. Plus, the city hosts a wealth of learning opportunities across subjects like art, history, geography, and science.

So, if you’d like to take your students to the effortlessly cool, sustainable, and modern capital of the Netherlands, we’ll help you build the perfect itinerary. Get in touch today for advice, ideas and a free quote.

Why Choose Amsterdam For An Educational Tour?

A case study in sustainability

Bikes outnumber people in Amsterdam (and across the Netherlands). That’s not just a fun fact for your students, it’s the starting point for understanding a society that values sustainability.

Take your geography students on a tour to experience the city’s famous bike lanes, canals and green spaces. They’ll gain practical insight into urban planning that actually works, and witness real-world environmental solutions in action, simply by exploring the city streets.

It’s perfect as a reference point for their end-of-year exams.

History you can walk through

The Anne Frank House stands as one of the most powerful educational experiences in Europe. Students visit the actual rooms where Anne and her family hid, making an immediate and personal impression in a way that textbooks can not.

But that’s not the only history on display. In just twenty-five minutes, you can walk to the Rijksmuseum to see Rembrandt’s Night Watch and learn more about the Dutch Golden Age.

And if you want even more art, the Van Gogh and Stedelijk museums are a mere 300m away.

STEM learning, but fun

Some museums have an unfortunate reputation as being a bit boring, especially for younger students. That is not the case in Amsterdam.

At the NEMO Science Museum, students work their way through five floors of hands-on, interactive exhibits. Outside the city, CORPUS offers an hour-long exploration through the human body, starting at the knee.

These experiences can aid your curriculum and inspire a passion for STEM subjects from all age groups.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Amsterdam is a relatively low-cost destination for school groups, although the total cost will depend on the number of nights you wish to visit. For a full, accurate quote, please get in touch.

Amsterdam is a good choice year-round. If you’re planning on visiting the city’s many museums, then this might make more sense over Autumn and Winter, before the weather starts to heat up in late Spring and Summer. Many groups choose to visit in November or December to coincide with Amsterdam’s famous Christmas Markets. As an added bonus, students can enjoy an afternoon of ice skating at the city’s Ice Village.

The easiest way to visit Amsterdam on a school trip is by coach. You’ll take the ferry across the English Channel, via Dover to Calais, and drive to Amsterdam from there. This takes around 4-5 hours.

Once you arrive, you’ll have full use of the coach each day for visits around the region. Some of the best attractions are located outside the city, so this is perfect.
